Before constructing the Plaza, the territory was known as the area of Principe Pio hill which was used by the French authorities to execute the prisoners in the occasion of May second upspring in 1808, now the plaza de Espana has been constructed at the same place.

Most of the monuments and sculptures are made of stones and there is a statue at the center of the square which was built to honor Carvantes who is one of the famous Spanish writers. Two of the tallest buildings of Madrid add more attraction around the plaza.
