Madrid- Barajas Airport is one of the busiest airport in Europe which is situated in Madrid. It is the largest airport in Spain which occupies about 3000 hectares of territory and is serving more than 50 million passengers every year.
The history of Madrid- Barajas Airport discloses that it was begun to construct in 1927 but it was formally inaugurated on 22 April 1931 with a small terminal with the capacity of 30000 passengers per year. Gradually, it was expanded by giving modern images with extra facilities and four terminals till 2004 which carried about 4200 million Euro to complete the construction project.
Now, it has become the world's popular airport which is also known as the busiest airport of Spain. The different terminals have its own features. Most of the domestic flights are made from first three terminals which are T1, T2 and T3 as well as it also serve for non-Spanish flights for European countries.
The modern and classic terminal T4 is recognized as one of the biggest airport terminals in the world in terms of occupied territory which occupies 760,000 square meters of territories. This modern terminal was designed by Richard Rogers, Antonio Lamela who were awarded by the Stirling Prize in 2006 and engineers of the terminal won the Structural Award due to its commercial structure which was constructed by Ferrovia. This terminal was inaugurated in 2006 with the purpose of serving the visitors for their stress free travel.
There are total four runways in this airport; two are on the northwest-southeast part with the distance of 2.5 km and the rest of two are on the north-south part with the distance of 1.8 km which help for landing and take off, about 120 operations per hour in the airport. Thus, this largest airport in Spain is serving about 70 millions of people with different facilities.
